About

JDI is a boutique consultancy that brings emerging technology and science-driven companies to market.

Our vision is a world in which science flourishes. We pursue mastery of marketing, communications, and design to ensure that our clients get the attention they deserve. We believe that a good story well-told can change the world.

Our clients are on a mission, and so are we.

Our Team
We’re a senior group, and we come from diverse backgrounds like journalism, industrial design, code, government, events, academia, film, and finance. Few of us self-selected for agency life originally. That makes us unusual as a firm. We do our best work when everyone’s voice is heard and appreciated. We value truth, growth, generosity, and diversity.

Alexa Ball
Damaris Alfonso
Director

As the child of an industrial designer and a journalist, pragmatic creativity has always been a mainstay in Damaris’ life. Her dad once explained the work of the invisible people who create logos during a visit to an antique store… and the rest is history. After a decade as a designer, she especially loves using illustration to catch people’s attention or communicate complex topics. For this reason, branding and infographics are among her favorite work.

Damaris’ work at JDI allows her to take advantage of her strengths as a communicator, but also as a student. Taking a client's nascent idea and turning it into a fully-realized vision is one of the most rewarding aspects of her career. And every client is an opportunity to learn about a new industry or science, as well as learn new ways to communicate with a different audience.

Her favorite (and highly recommended!) podcasts include Hidden Brain, Heavyweight, and 99% Invisible.

Juan Ávila
Manager

Discovering his love for collaborative work came to Juan by accident. At the last minute, a music festival hired him to be a pianist. He found out that there is nothing more exciting than working with others towards the same goal.

In his hometown of Bogotá, Juan loved working in opera departments with many different kinds of creative people all striving toward the same goal: to perform an opera under ridiculously tight deadlines and budgets. This discovery led him to earn a doctorate in collaborative piano. He thrived on the mix of precision, art, and research required in the program.

JDI is also a place of intense collaboration, where art and science are mixed. Juan is excited to be here because he's always been curious about how the world works. As soon as he learned to use a screwdriver, he disassembled anything he could get his hands on. Now Juan gets to unravel the scientific discoveries made by clients and marvel at the things they’ve made.

Alexa Ball
Vice President

Alexa busts into markets with high barriers. She prizes agility and swiftness, helping her clients create influence and build momentum on a daily basis. Done well, small moments can impact major movements.

A teacher at heart, Alexa has learned how to harness the “kids-eye” view. She gravitates towards above and beyond ideas, where nothing big or small is out of bounds. It’s “what if” and “yes, and,” and then rolling up her sleeves to make the blue sky a reality.

Before JDI, she worked closely with underprivileged youth as an instructor in AmeriCorps. Today she’s a therapeutic riding instructor at Healing With Horses Ranch, and Alexa also co-leads JDI’s professional development program.

You’ll rarely find her without dirt under her nails or her canine companion, Luna. She calls many places home, having been born in Canada, raised in Charleston, and educated in Scotland.

Talia Bromberg
Senior Director

Talia loves the ephemeral nature of design, which turns intangible feelings and ideas into a tangible experience that communicates something and serves someone. Taking a client’s vision and goals and translating them into visual form is an extraordinary and rewarding challenge.

Talia’s academic and work experiences align with her desire to understand people and human behavior. She studied film and anthropology at Mount Holyoke College and assessed independent films for potential acquisition and distribution at FilmBuff.com. Design is at the crossroads of visual creativity and the pursuit of human understanding; it begins with understanding the user, along with their challenges and desires.

Talia previously worked for Mogul.com, a platform to help women across the globe connect and exchange knowledge. Mogul exposed her to design thinking and the ins and outs of product development, along with the opportunity to design in different media from VR and animation to app design.

Justin creates and implements systems that track our KPIs. He excels at analyzing and interpreting the data that guides decisions made by executives at JDI. Justin brings a meticulous eye to research and has an affinity for finances.

Prior to JDI, Justin was a Loss Mitigation Specialist at OneWest Bank (acquired by CIT Group). He built the bank’s first quality control department, implemented new auditing policies, and helped senior executives navigate an ever-changing landscape of regulation and compliance issues.

Rebecca Ewing
Vice President

As a Vice President at JDI, Rebecca is focused on creative services: from copywriting to graphic design and code, from photography to film and audio production. She has spent a decade as both a verbal and a visual communicator, helping companies large and small craft a narrative that speaks volumes. She's a marketer by trade, but an artist at heart. Rebecca believes that the best designs in any medium are data-driven and customer-obsessed. After years as a communicator, she is building a unique creative department at JDI that looks at client challenges from the same side of the table as marketing itself.

The majority of her experience lies in emerging consumer technology, with a focus on sports, entertainment, health and social impact. Previous to JDI, Rebecca spent two and a half years at global agency Porter Novelli, for which she's eternally grateful. There was no better place to learn the ropes; PN instilled in her the drive of an entrepreneur and opened her eyes to a wide world of innovation.

Tony Fassi
Vice President

Tony works closely with enterprise software and developer-focused clients, and he's a lifelong tinkerer and naturalist. He bought his first telescope at age 12 and has built almost every computer he's ever owned.

Tony is driven to both understand how things work and tell stories that inspire a similar curiosity in others. At JDI he applies his expertise across AI, Robotics, Blockchain, and Genomics. The majority of his work spans content creation – writing op-eds, white papers, and case studies – media relations, and messaging and positioning. He also enjoys recruiting for JDI.

Before joining JDI Tony worked as a US Coast Guard Captain and a divemaster, founded a coffee roasting company, and earned a doctorate in American Studies at UT Austin where he taught courses on the history of underground infrastructure and the rhetoric of futurism.

These days he spends as much time as he can exploring the outdoors with his daughter, Luisa, reading pulp detective fiction, and taking stuff apart.

Gabby Ferguson
Manager

Anyone who knows Gabby will tell you that her name doubles as an apt personality description: she is a passionate communicator. Gabby is a helper by nature and to her, there’s nothing better than being the conduit that meaningfully connects customers to brands.

Gabby went to the world’s first journalism school and is proud of her educational background. At the Missouri School of Journalism, she found her purpose: shaping clients' stories so that consumers understand their brilliance and impact. She most recently worked in public relations for ALDI USA, where she helped spearhead PR surrounding their sustainability initiatives, another passion of hers.

Moving was the norm for Gabby growing up, from Peoria to Singapore, but in each place she went, the people she met helped transform her into the communicator she is today. She’s excited to be in her new (much warmer) home city of Austin.

Risa Fielder
Senior Director

As a young child, Risa drove her mother crazy when she’d beg her to stop the car so she could ask someone, “Why are you doing that?” Her curiosity about people blossomed into a career in customer service, where she strived to understand how to improve people’s experiences.

When she started working at the Acton School of Business, Risa maintained her focus on customers but added responsibilities for the operations of the university. It was a delightful surprise when she learned to love google sheets, analytics and pivot tables!

Risa currently works as Chief of Staff to Josh Jones-Dilworth of JDI. Here her talents flourish as the two worlds of people and operations collide. The mission of JDI is to help make precedent-setting science companies thrive; Risa amplifies Josh’s efforts to deepen JDI’s impact.

Whether she’s having a beer with a construction worker or sipping champagne with CEOs at a fundraiser, Risa knows life is full of amazing stories and she is eager to hear them all.

Ryan is insatiably curious. An avid reader and learner, he loves to explore new ideas — from the granular to the grand. He always has questions and looks for the how, the what and the why. Following a top-down approach to problem solving, he starts at the solution, and not the problem.

Before JDI, Ryan was a hospitality professional, and worked as both a cook and bartender. He practices a mise en place mindset: working meticulously and methodically, trusting in preparedness. In marketing, he now holds that you can’t be ready for everything, but you can be ready for anything.

Outside of work, he spends his time cooking, enjoying nature and studying data science at The University of Texas at Austin.

    Michelle Gamboa
    Manager

Michelle’s core mission is to help people feel inspired to try things differently. She puts this mission to work on the JDI operations team, helping lead recruitment, training, and professional development.

Michelle discovered her passion for helping people thrive when she spontaneously moved to South Korea to teach English. There, she reveled in the challenge of finding inventive ways for her young students to practice a new language. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do to make learning just a little more special – from designing elaborate games, hunting down ingredients for a taco making lesson, and even teaching the Cha Cha Slide (despite her own atrocious sense of rhythm.)

After that, she was hooked on empowering others to grow their potential. In her career, she has trained Starbucks baristas on customer service, taught teenagers psychology in Shakespearean plays, and connected educators to local chefs and hoteliers for unconventional curriculum development.

Now, at JDI she continues that work by helping the team become world-class in marketing and design, and experts in helping precedent-setting science companies become well-known and understood.

Michelle is a devoted consumer of cooking and baking competition shows, true crime podcasts, and science fiction/fantasy novels. She also unironically enjoys organizing and color coding everything in her life.

When it came time to make a career decision, there was only one route she wanted to take: creating well-told stories that had consumers reaching for a tissue, laughing out loud, or rethinking an opinion.

Since then, Rose has immersed herself in advertising, from serving on various leadership and board positions for Ad 2 and AAF to helping to create fully pro-bono marketing campaigns for nonprofits in her free time. Shanna Gerlach
        Manager

Instead of going to preschool like most kids, Shanna spent her most formative toddler years at her family’s kitchen table splattered with paint and glue, experimenting with her mom’s old art supplies and a collection of odds and ends. Though Shanna doesn’t remember exactly what she created, she does remember how: with abandon, confidence, curiosity, and boundless ambition.

Now armed with a dual-degree in theater and psych (and those countless hours of kitchen-table art), Shanna remains true to her multidisciplinary roots.

She is the most excited about projects that reach above and beyond, recognizing that often the best approaches to problem-solving are the untraditional ones. In her design work, she is passionate about surprising people, immersing them in unexpected experiences that spark wonder just as fluently as they communicate complex ideas.

In the same breath, the logical side of her brain thrives in handling emergent and high-stakes situations. She’s honed these skills as a camp advisor with Camp Kesem (a national non-profit for kids impacted by a parent’s cancer) and carries that leadership and follow-through to her work today, ensuring that the big ideas she dreams up actually come to life.

And if you need any more proof that Shanna refuses to back down from a challenge, in her free time she loves bouldering, sharing her spoken word poetry, thrifting unique and fun pieces, and racing the clock to solve the daily NYT crossword.

        President & COO

JDI calls upon Liz’s writing, teaching, process-creating, and problem-solving skills on a daily basis. Fueling her efforts is her goal to make JDI a place where everyone on the team finds their work meaningful.

Liz first pursued the most impactful career she could imagine: teaching. While getting her Ph.D. in American poetry, she taught literature and communication at The University of Texas at Austin. Inside academia, she was horrified by the working conditions her colleagues had to accept in order to do the work they loved.

Meanwhile, exploring publishing and non-profits sparked her interest in operations. Initially attracted to these companies for the art they created, Liz found she cared most about how they ran, how they fostered growth, and how they treated customers and team members.

            Sohaila Mueller
            Associate

Sohaila has spent a lifetime mastering how to bend the constraints of space, time, and resources to her will. While working at a community development center, she fed 60 people twice a day with food bank donations and without a functional kitchen. She’s at her best when she's cartwheeling between a variety of tasks, stomping out fires, and yanking out inefficiency by the root.

Sohaila loves to see people thrive and eagerly removes obstacles that keep them from doing so. As both a teacher and a hairstylist, she learned how to build rapport and relate to anyone without judgement.

At JDI, curating guest experience, finding interior design pieces, solving IT quandaries and developing financial reports are all in a day's work for Sohaila.

When she is not reading voraciously, you can find her on the golf course or in the garden, always birdwatching.

                Brittany Solano
                Vice President

Brittany pushes big, classical industries forward. Her work spans agriculture, healthcare and manufacturing.

The key to communicating scientific concepts is discerning the basic building blocks of any given breakthrough. There’s almost always an old technology behind each new one. As such, Brittany is at her best when marketing science from the inside out, starting with a solid understanding of a technology’s fundamentals. She has an uncanny ability to convey esoteric concepts to a mass market.

Brittany also co-leads JDI’s business development efforts; she is responsible for developing new practice areas like food systems and consumer genomics.

Previously Brittany helped start The Food Lab, ran the Food Studies Project, interned at Texas Monthly, and wrote for the Daily Texan.

She lives outside of Austin in historic Georgetown with her husband, Tim, and her two dogs, Scout and Ollie. She spends her time outdoors as much as possible.

                Heather Stafford
                Director

Raised outside Baltimore, Heather has long been fascinated with human behavior and the wide range of factors that influence it. Her interest in the ‘UX of cities’ led her to earn her master’s in Media Studies and Technology from the University of Texas at Austin, and continues to inform how she thinks about user experience and the sociological implications of emerging technologies.

At JDI, Heather’s work with health tech, artificial intelligence and agtech clients has validated her belief that technology can save the world, but only if people want to hear about it.

Prior to JDI, she managed customer service, events and operations at General Assembly and was a transit supervisor at the University of Virginia.

Despite her experience in technology, Heather learned most of what she knows driving a bus for a living. Outside of work, Heather loves to bake, spin yarns (literally and figuratively), and have conversations with her dog and cat. She is still hunting for the best bagel in Austin.

                Jamal Wilburn
                Senior Director

Jamal’s career has spanned finance, media, theater, entrepreneurship, and technology. What ties it all together is a passion for how creative thinking and communication unfold in a business context. Nothing is more exciting to him than helping others find their voice.

Jamal is focused on business development at JDI, where he gets to reframe the questions that founding teams are facing. Risk takers spark Jamal’s curiosity; uncovering their drivers, goals, and emotions is his favorite part of the job.

Jamal studied International Business and Finance at Howard University, and Finance and Entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Prior to JDI, Jamal’s experience at boutique investment management firms William Blair & Company and Dimensional Fund Advisors gave him an appreciation for the value of good advice.

Outside the office, Jamal is often reading the Economist, working on his deadlift, or watching Netflix. And chilling.

                Marketing, Director
Dig deeper into the minds and stories behind breakthrough science in our weekly publication.
One of our many extracurricular projects at JDI is that we’re very proud co-owners of the science, art, and culture magazine Nautilus. Written by scientists and journalists alike, the magazine follows the story wherever the science leads.
The author, Robert Burton, M.D., a neurologist and novelist, says it best:
“Science remains one of the great advances of humankind. Its stories, properly told, are epic poems in progress, and deserve to stand alongside the great stories of history.”
                Impact
We are proud to have partnered with the fine folks below by donating time, making direct investments, and serving as Advisors and on Boards.
